Extolling Mahatma Gandhi's message of harmony, peace and brotherhood, the Dalai Lama has urged followers of all religions to show tolerance, understanding and respect for all faiths and follow the path of non-violence. He also stressed the importance of leading simple life, pointing out that Gandhi had done that despite being a leader revered by millions.
More than 3
000 people applauded as the Dalai Lama accepted the award bestowed on him for "endowing his life to dispel the misery of the world by inspiring the promoting the spirit non violence, social justice and mutual respect for enduring peace and happiness of the humanity." Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, presented the award and plaque to the Dalai Lama at the First Emory University Summit on Religion, Conflict and Peace held at the spacious Woodruff Physical Education Center at the Emory Campus in Atlanta, Georgia, this weekend. Why the whole world respecting Gandhi ? The Gandhi Foundation was set up in 1983 to spread knowledge of the philosophy and teaching of Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) in Britain. Central to Gandhi's vision was an impassioned conviction that at the heart of all life there is Truth which sustains all creation, a Truth which demands a personal response from each individual. He saw Truth as a Truth present in every person. This requires active, loving service to humanity, a form of practical spirituality open to every woman and man. In particular, he held non-violence as a basic tenet, a positive outgoing belief to bring about fundamental change at all levels, from the interpersonal to relations between states. Non-violence is the discovery of a new kind of power.
